The Whole Back
The Whole Back is a sequence of gentle, patterned movements originally developed by Dr. Eleanor Criswell of the Novato Institute of Hanna Somatics. In this workshop, we’ll use it as a guided somatic meditation—a way to unwind habitual holding patterns and reorganize the terrain of the back body, which often bears the imprint of stress, over-efforting, and unconscious compensation.
We’ll begin by grounding in somatic principles and body-mind theory, exploring how sensation, awareness, and repetition inform structure. The middle portion of class offers a full-body sequence designed to reorganize common muscular contractions in the neck, back, and hips—not just to relieve discomfort, but to re-pattern the nervous system and restore function.
After a short break, we’ll transition into dynamic postural work—using Katonah Yoga® techniques to substantiate the body and integrate what’s been reorganized. Through measured form and patterned breath, we’ll bridge the internal and external, making the body more functional for walking, running, resting, and living well in your house.
