Introduction to the Magic Square
The magic square designed by Neicy Frey
In this workshop, we will explore a foundational tool in Katonah Yoga® called the Magic Square. It’s a 3x3 grid—a map we lay over the mat and the body to help us organize ourselves. Each square corresponds to a part of the body and a quality of experience, giving us a way to place ourselves with purpose rather than moving from habit.
The Magic Square is based on the metaphor of the body is your house. It has three floors—lower, middle, and upper—and nine rooms. Just like a well-designed home, when each room is functional and connected, the whole house supports you better. As we explore the square today, you’ll start to see how this metaphor becomes a practical tool for refining your postures, your breath, and your perspective.
